"Animals who attempt to solve mysteries" seems like an underserved genre. 2026's The Sheep Detectives attempts to correct that status.

In the small English village of Denbrook, shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) leads a secluded life with his flock as his main "friends". This situation gets disrupted when George winds up dead, apparently due to murder.

George would read mystery novels to the sheep and ewe Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) thinks she can use this knowledge to find the culprit. As the humans pursue their own investigation, Lily and others try to get to the bottom of the case.

On paper, Sheep Detectives sounds downright idiotic. A tale of barnyard animals who try to solve a crime just seems stupid on the surface.

Happily, Detectives manages to overcome its potential pitfalls. Smart, charming and inventive, the movie allows us to suspend disbelief.

Let's face it: we must obliterate disbelief to enjoy a tale such as this. Detectives doesn't completely anthropomorphize the sheep - they can't speak to humans, for instance - but it still requires the viewer to accept a "secret life" that manages no connection to reality.

In lesser hands, this would turn into a disaster. However, director Kyle Balda creates a warm and endearing fable that ensures we accept its basic silliness.

Balda comes from the world of animation, and most of his prior features as director relate to the Minions and Despicable Me franchises. Of course, those offer even more ludicrous stories than Detectives, but since they exist in the "anything goes" fantasy world of cartoons, we swallow those flights of fancy more readily.

Given that Detectives ostensibly exists in the "real world", it offers a tougher test of audience willingness to go with its particular flow. Balda executes it in such an amiable, clever and charming manner that we never question the validity of what we see.

A pretty stellar cast helps, as in addition to solid live-action performers like Jackman, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau and Nicholas Braun, we find a great collection of voice actors such as Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart and others. All add verve to their roles.

When 2026 winds to a close, Sheep Detectives may stand as the year's most pleasant surprise. It fares much better than its premise implies and becomes a warm and amusing journey.

The Sheep Detectives appears in an aspect ratio of 2.00:1 on this Blu-ray Disc. The film came with an appealing presentation.

For the most part, sharpness worked fine. Some softness interfered at times – probably as a way to allow the CG animals to better integrate with the real-life elements – but the majority of the movie offered fine accuracy and delineation.

Detectives lacked jagged edges or moiré effects, and no edge haloes could be seen. The image also presented no print flaws.

The movie’s palette opted for an emphasis on teal and amber, though presented in an airy manner. The Blu-ray depicted the hues well.

Blacks seemed dark and firm, while low-light shots provided smooth, clear elements. Outside of the occasional soft shot, this turned into a solid image.

As for the film’s Dolby Atmos soundtrack, it offered occasional pleasures. Downconverted to Dolby TrueHD 7.1, the mix boasted good stereo presence to music as well as some effects.

Much of the mix opted for general ambience, but a few scenes added life, mainly those related to sheep-based antics or thunder. Still, the track stayed with semi-low-key information much of the time, so don’t expect a consistently active track.

Audio quality worked fine, with speech that appeared natural and distinctive, without edginess or other issues. Music sounded lush and full.

Effects provided similarly rich material, as those elements seemed accurate and dynamic, with deep low-end as necessary. Again, this track lacked consistent vivacity, but it still seemed good enough for a “B”.

No extras appear on the disc.

Despite an absurd premise, The Sheep Detectives offers a winning and heartwarming fable. It mixes clever comedy and a lively spirit to become an engaging mix of laughs, mystery and sentiment. The Blu-ray offers solid picture and audio but it lacks supplements. I wish the disc included some bonus features, but its charms make it a worthwhile purchase nonetheless.
